Arthur's (tm) Birthday version 2.0 ReadMe Windows(R) August 8, 1997 Welcome to the world of Living Books (R). You and your child are about to experience a fun and fantastic learning environment where characters and objects come alive and bring a whole new dimension to storytelling. This ReadMe contains technical information for Arthur's Birthday. Copyright Information 1. Installation Windows 95 To Install Begin at the Windows 95 desktop. Insert the CD-ROM disc into your CD-ROM drive. The Arthur's Birthday Startup window will appear. Click the Install button and follow the on-screen instructions to install the program. If The Arthur's Birthday Startup window does not appear automatically on screen, you can install the program manually. Click the Start button on the taskbar and choose Run. Type D:\SETUP.EXE in the line labeled Open. (If your CD-ROM drive uses a letter other than "D," substitute that letter for "D.") Click the OK button and follow the on-screen instructions to install Arthur's Birthday. To Play After successfully installing the program, click the Run button at the Startup window to start the program. The Startup window will usually appear each time the CD-ROM disc is inserted into the CD-ROM drive. If the Arthur's Birthday Startup window does not automatically appear on screen, begin at the Windows 95 desktop. Click the Start button, point to Programs, and then Living Books. Click the Arthur's Birthday menu item to start the program. To Remove If you need to remove Arthur's Birthday, begin at the Windows 95 desktop. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Click the Install/Uninstall tab and select Arthur's Birthday from the list of programs. Click the Add/Remove...button and then click the Yes button to remove the program. Windows 3.1x To Install Begin at the Windows Program Manager. Insert the CD-ROM disc into your CD-ROM drive. Pull down the File menu and choose Run. Type D:\SETUP.EXE in the line labeled Command Line. (If your CD-ROM drive uses a letter other than "D," substitute that letter for "D.") Click the OK button and follow the on-screen instructions to install the program. To Play After successfully installing the program, a program group titled Living Books will be created in the Windows Program Manager. It will contain an icon labeled "Arthur's Birthday." Double-click this icon to begin playing. Select a Mode Read to Me When you make the Read to Me selection, your cursor will disappear as you see the book unfold page by page. Your cursor will only reappear when you return to the Control Panel Page after the book is finished. You can also use the Enter key on your keyboard to return to the Control Panel Page. Use the Right or Left arrow key on your keyboard to skip ahead or see an earlier page in the book. You can switch to "Let Me Play" mode by pressing "P" on your keyboard. Let Me Play When you click the Let Me Play button, you'll be able to start exploring each page after its introduction. Use the cursor to select different items you would like to see come to life on the screen. There are many hidden buttons on every page, so be sure to search carefully before turning each page. You can switch to Read to Me mode while reading the book by pressing "R" on your keyboard. Options Page Clicking the Options button will take you to the Options Page where you can go directly to any page in the book in interactive (Let Me Play) mode. You cannot jump directly into the story in passive (Read to Me) mode. To go directly to a page, click the forward or back arrow until you see the page number you want. Then click the OK button to go to that page. To see the Credits for Arthur's Birthday, click the Credits button. When the Credits are finished, you will return to the Options Page. To return to the Control Panel Page, click the arrow at the bottom left of the page, or press the Enter key. Once in the Control Panel Page, to visit the activity pages click the Mystery button or the Pin the Tail button. Turning Pages To turn pages, click the forward or back arrow located in the lower-right and lower-left corners of the screen, or press the Right or Left arrows on your keyboard. To return to the Control Panel Page, click the page number at the bottom of each screen, or press the Enter key. Printing Pages While reading or playing interactive pages of the product, you can print out the screen by pressing the Ctrl+P key combination. It will print only in landscape mode to match the shape of the screen. Activities The Great Gift Mystery Clicking the Mystery button on the Control Panel Page will take you to The Great Gift Mystery activity. You can also play The Great Gift Mystery by clicking the Notebook at the bottom of each page or by finding your first clue. When you first start, D.W. will explain her game. She tore all the cards off Arthur's presents so Arthur can't tell who gave them to him. To help Arthur match his presents with the givers, you can gather one clue from each interactive page.The first click on a random interactive item will show you the clue. There is also a hint button, which is indicated by a ?, on each page to help you find the clue. The clues you find will be saved inside the Notebook. When you click the present button inside the Notebook, you will be taken to the Party Page where you can hear and see the clues you have gathered and match each present with Arthur's friends. When you have solved the mystery, Arthur will thank you and invite you to open one of his gifts. Pin the Tail on the Donkey Clicking the Pin the Tail button on the Control Panel Page will take you to the Pin the Tail on the Donkey activity. Two people can play, or you can click on Arthur's picture and play the activity with Arthur. When you pick up a tail, music will start and the donkey will dance. Try to pin the tail as he dances. When you pin the donkey, he will comment on how you do. If you pin things in the background, they will react. The tape measures show which player's tail is closest to the donkey. If you win a round, you get a trophy. When you win three trophies, the donkey celebrates your win with a special dance. Use the A, B, or C buttons on the Boom Box to make different musical selections. Use the Slider to speed up or slow down the music. For a real challenge, use the Light Switch to turn out the lights. 2. Troubleshooting Shortcuts In either mode of play, you can press the Alt key to display or hide the menu bar, which will be hidden when play begins. Press the Enter key anywhere in the story to go directly to the Control Panel Page. You can use the Ctrl key with the Up or Down arrow key to adjust your computer's volume level. On your keyboard, press the "R" key for Read to Me and the "P" key for Let Me Play to change from one mode to the other. Press the Ctrl+Q key combination from anywhere in the story to quit. Memory Living Books products are designed to use 8 MB of memory for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. Screen Savers If your computer has a software screen saver enabled, it might interrupt Living Books, especially during the Read to Me mode. Be sure to disable your screen saver software while using Living Books to avoid interruption.
